Nonprofit to Award Annual Scholarships to High School Band Students
FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA.- (January 11, 2023) South Florida Pride Wind Ensemble’s 12th Annual Youth Pride Band Concert is scheduled for Sunday, February 26 at 7 p.m., at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts’ Amaturo Theater. Tickets are $35 and can be purchased at browardcenter.org/events/detail/sfl-pride-wind-youth-pride-band-2023
The evening’s program includes awarding a series of $1,000 scholarships to South Florida high school band students. In addition to receiving the monetary reward, students will acquire invaluable musical mentorship from an outstanding artistic team along with the opportunity to practice and perform alongside members of the South Florida Pride Wind Ensemble. A signature program of the South Florida Pride Wind Ensemble, the nonprofit has distributed $159,000 in Youth Pride scholarship funds since 2012.
In addition, one talented student will receive a supplemental $5,000 scholarship from the inaugural FLoatarama Youth Pride Band Soloist competition care of the FLoatarama LGBTQ Youth Fund and featured as a soloist on the Pride Wind Ensemble’s May concert.
“With more people identifying as LGBTQ earlier in their lives, it is vital that we as a community create a safe space, protect against bullying and celebrate our diversity through the power of music,” said Adam DeRosa, board chair of the South Florida Pride Wind Ensemble.
The special performance will be conducted by Emmy® Award winning composer Julie Giroux. An accomplished orchestrator, composer, arranger, clinician and guest conductor, Giroux became the first female composer to have her work performed during a U.S. Presidential Inauguration ceremony when the presidential band performed her piece as Vice President Kamala D. Harris was introduced.
